The Fishing seasons |
- June: Fishing is usually good in
the lower reaches of the river, because the high water level makes fishing
almost impossible in the Krivetz river, but for the Umba river this month
is the most productive. The large fall salmon, so unique for the Umba
area, wakes up from the winter "hibernation" and starts to join the fresh
run salmon on their way towards the spawning grounds. Not to be confused
with Kelts (black-salmon) this magnificent deep and strong-fighting salmon
is still in its silvery livery. The most of fishing is done by casting
from boats, but the Brad Pool and the Home Pool area offer fantastic
fishing from the banks.
- July: During the first two weeks
the main fishing is from boats and from the banks in the lower section.
Some pools in the Krivetz river begin to be good for fishing, but normally
the water is still too high to be able for fishing from the banks of all
pools. During the last two weeks the water level normally abates and makes
fishing in the whole Krivetz river possible. The summer run fills the
pools up with salmon from the sea in sizes 3-10 kilo, some even bigger!
The water temperature can be quite high, and light tackle with floating
line and fast moving small flies is often the most productive. The Krivetz
tent camp is set up the second week of July. Besides the excellent salmon
fishing, the Krivetz river also offers some of the world's best fishing
for large Arctic Grayling. If you are interested, bring some lighter
tackle (#4-6 rods with floating lines and nymphs or dries).
- August: August on the Umba is a
month of transition. The weather is gradually getting cooler, as well as
the water. The fishing up in the Krivetz is the best from the pools
virtually "full of fish" from the summer run as well as the last autumn
run. The first of the fall-run salmon are entering the river normally
during the last week(s) of August. They are big, bright and extremely
aggressive. This is truly the best of Umba fishing, using small fast
fishing flies and light tackle. The take feels like a down explosion all
the way down. Your Umba guide is always ready to assist.
- September / October: The late
season on the Umba is the time when the biggest salmon migrates to upper
reaches of the river. This unique run of late salmon is extremely deep and
powerful created by spending a full year in the river before the next year
spawning. From the lodge you can see new fish coming into the Home Pool
every day, jumping to challenge your flies. At the time one normally is
fishing with sinking lines and big flies, we are doing better with small
flies and slow intermediate or even floating lines. Although the days are
shorter and the weather is more severe, the late season on the Umba is
unparalleled. By our knowledge, no other river on the Kola Peninsula can
compete for the same numbers of truly big salmon as the Umba river in
September and October.
